The show revolves around Ed Stevens, a New York City lawyer who, in a single day, loses his job (over a misplaced comma in a contract) and finds his wife sleeping with a mailman. Ed deals with his failure and rejection by regressing into his past - he spends a beer-soaked evening with his high school yearbook, and takes a trip back to his Ohio hometown of Stuckeyville. Once there, he works up the nerve to ask out the most popular girl in his high school class, Carol Vessey, who has been dating Ed`s favorite English teacher for seven years. He also resumes acquaintances with old friends Mike and Nancy, who are now married and coping with work and parenting in the new millennium.
On his final night in Stuckeyville, Ed has a date with Carol, and they share a short kiss in the park. He is so overjoyed that he buys the local bowling alley, if only as an excuse to stay in town and be close to her. In his haste, he does not initially realize that he has inherited a bowling alley that is only active on league nights, as well as a staff of goofballs.
Eventually, he moves in with Mike and Nancy (he moved out on his own in episode 8), and sets up his own law practice in the Stuckeybowl pro shop. He increases traffic by giving out free law advice to anyone who bowls three games. But Ed insists that he is no "bowling alley lawyer" - in his own words, "I own a bowling alley, and I`m a lawyer - two separate things."
The fictional town of Stuckeyville is located somewhere in Ohio; the exact geographical location or region is not known, except there are a few references to the "Tri-State Area," which is what some Ohioans refer to the eastern part near Pennsylvania and West Virginia. This has led some to believe that "Stuckeyville" is somewhere near Youngstown. The show is shot in northern New Jersey. (see 3.2)
Worldwide Pants produced and pitched a pilot called "Stuckeyville" to CBS in 1999; the network did not feel that it fit their needs. Tom Cavanagh has said in interviews that the show was also offered to HBO.
Rob Burnett has said that the initial half-hour version of the show called for Ed to be more neurotic. He also mentioned that the lawyer angle was NBC`s idea once CBS dropped it, that they were trying to build a "franchise" that didn`t have to solely revolve around the characters` relationships.

Tom`s official NBC bio:Tom Cavanagh stars in the title role of "Ed" as a man who firmly believes in second chances, both in life and love. His critically acclaimed performance has earned him a Golden Globe nomination as well as last year?s TV Guide Award for Favorite Actor in a New Series. In its premiere season, "Ed" won a People?s Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy Series.
Cavanagh was born in Ottawa, Canada, the second child of five children. When he was 6, his parents moved the family to a small village in the West African nation of Ghana. His father set up an education program to train local teachers in modern methods of learning while his mother taught the village locals.
Cavanagh spent his childhood in Ghana but traveled all over Europe during the summer. His family returned to their native Canada and Cavanagh started high school in Montreal. He later enrolled in Queens College in Ontario and pursued his growing interest in theater and music. He also became an exceptional athlete, playing varsity hockey and basketball. But his ballplaying days temporarily ended when he took off for New York when he was cast in the musical revival of "Shenandoah" (with John Cullum) on Broadway. His other stage credits include "Grease," "A Chorus Line," "Cabaret" and "Brighton Beach Memoirs."
On the small screen, Cavanagh had a recurring role on NBC?s "Providence" as a vulnerable young man from Newfoundland who thought he was a dog until he discovered his inner man. Earlier, he starred alongside Della Reese in the TV movie "Anya`s Bell."
Cavanagh`s feature-film credits include the family drama "Northern Lights" (where he played Diane Keaton`s brother) as well as the adventure "Magic in the Water" and the action-thriller "Mask of Death." His additional film credits include "The Dukes," "Honeymoon," "Movin` On Up" and "Car 54."
Last year, Cavanagh took advantage of his hiatus break to star in the cable movie, "Bang, Bang, You?re Dead," about school violence, based on the award-winning play of the same name.
When he?s not working, Cavanagh still avidly participates in many sports. He maintains his home in Los Angeles while ?Ed? films in the New York area. Cavanagh?s birthday is October 26.
Julie`s official NBC bio:A rising star on the big and small screens alike, Julie Bowen stars as the dream girl of former classmate-turned-lawyer Ed (title star Tom Cavanagh) whom he pursues upon returning to his hometown on "Ed." "Carol is the girl who has always been idolized," says Bowen. "But now she needs to be more than just a male fantasy. She`s at a point where she wants to decide who she really is."
Bowen was raised in Baltimore, Maryland, where she caught the acting bug as a child while putting on plays with her two sisters in their backyard. She attended Brown University, where she starred in "Guys and Dolls," "Stage Door" and "Lemon Sky." While earning a degree in Italian Renaissance studies, she spent a year in Florence, Italy, and became fluent in Italian.
During her senior year at Brown, Bowen landed the lead role in the independent film "Five Spot Jewel." She continued working in commercials and eventually earned a recurring role on the daytime drama "Loving." Bowen was also featured in actor-director Ed Burns` debut film "No Visible Bruises," and guest-starred on the dramatic series "Class of `96." She then moved to Los Angeles, and within weeks, landed the lead in the Showtime drama "Runaway Daughters," directed by Joe Dante.
Bowen went on to star as Adam Sandler`s girlfriend in the film comedy "Happy Gilmore," and appeared with Michael Keaton in "Multiplicity." She also starred in "An American Werewolf in Paris," and performed with Lynn Redgrave in the independent romantic comedy feature "Venus & Mars."
Bowen also played Noah Wyle`s girlfriend for nine episodes of NBC`s "ER," and made guest appearances on "Party of Five" and "Strange Luck." She made her debut as a series regular playing a paramedic opposite James Brolin in the outdoor-adventure drama "Extreme," and also starred as a former career criminal recruited for perilous, top-secret missions in the action-adventure series "Three."
Last year, Bowen starred opposite Tim Allen in the film "Joe Somebody" and is now appearing as the new television spokeswoman for Neutrogena.
Bowen lives in Los Angeles and New York, and when she`s not working, she enjoys hiking, reading and tutoring high school students. Her birthday is March 3.
Josh`s official NBC bio:Josh Randall returns for a third season as Dr. Mike Burton, the title character`s best friend -- or, "A guy who wanted the all-American dream and now has it, and isn`t quite sure where to go from there," says Randall. Off-screen, Randall was headed down a different road other than acting until a fateful class in college forever changed his life.
Randall was born and raised in Pacific Grove, California.
He played basketball in high school and continued playing at San Francisco State University, where he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in English literature. In his junior year, one of the playwrights in his writing class kept using Randall to read his dialogue out loud. The playwright wound up offering him a part in his play, "Sound Barriers," prompting Randall to pursue an acting career after college.
In addition, Randall continued to perform on stage, starring in San Francisco productions of "Enemy Territory," "Green Room," "Benchmarks," "Permanently Missing," "A Lesson in Obedience" and "The Stage," and a Los Angeles production of "Barefoot in the Park."
Randall recently completed the independent film "Escape Artists." His other film credits include the independent drama "The Last Time I Committed Suicide," the dark comedy "The Party Crashers," and "Somebody is Waiting," opposite Gabriel Byrne. Randall also guest starred as a bartender on the series "Angel."
In his spare time, Randall enjoys writing, hiking and playing basketball. He lives in New York and Los Angeles. His birthday is January 27.
Jana Marie`s official NBC bio:As Nancy on "Ed," Jana Marie Hupp says she plays a "very genuine, slightly neurotic mother who, with her husband and baby balance her life as best as she can."
Hupp has also guest-starred on a variety of top-rated shows. She was last seen on NBC`s "Providence" as Joanie`s (Paula Cale) best friend and had a notable turn on NBC`s "Friends" as Mindy, Rachel`s (Jennifer Aniston) former best friend who steals her fianc?. Hupp also appeared on "Seinfeld" as Jason Alexander`s girlfriend and on "The Drew Carey Show" as Carey`s date.
Hupp?s additional television credits include Steven Bochco`s "Public Morals," "Brooklyn South," "Melrose Place," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and the movie "In the Line of Duty: Smoke Jumpers."
On the big screen, Hupp was last seen in Roland Emmerich`s blockbuster "Independence Day" and the Coen Brothers` "Barton Fink."
On stage, Hupp appeared in the L.A. Theater Works production of "Earth and Sky" with Steven Weber and Annette Bening, as well as starred in the Washington production of "Gypsy," "Taming of the Shrew," "Bye, Bye Birdie" and "Oklahoma."
Born in Spokane Washington, raised in the Seattle area, Hupp studied opera at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Hupp currently lives in New York.
Lesley`s official NBC bio:Lesley Boone, who returns as Molly Hudson for the third season on NBC`s critically acclaimed "Ed," describes Molly as "everyone`s best friend ... she is funny, sassy, sarcastic and just easy to be around."
A Los Angeles native, Boone made her television debut guest-starring on the Steven Bochco series "Hooperman." Shortly after, Boone was offered a starring role as the youngest of three sisters on the sitcom "Babes" and has been working steadily ever since. Her other television credits include roles on "High Incident," "L.A. Law," "Wings." "Growing Pains," "Danger Theater," "Glory Days," "Mr. Belvedere," "Doogie Howser, M.D.," "Parker Lewis Can`t Lose" and "The Mommies."
On the big screen, Boone co-starred with Jonathan Taylor Thomas in "I`ll Be Home for Christmas," and starred as the dysfunctional sister of Stuart (Al Franken) in the Harold Ramis comedy "Stuart Saves His Family." She was featured as Billy Crystal`s secretary in "City Slickers II," and also starred in the independent comedy "Pride and Peril."
Boone`s theater credits include Los Angeles productions of "Oliver Twisted," "Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Hello, Dolly" and "Pizza Man." Boone was also seen on stage in "South Pacific" "Fiddler on the Roof," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Actors Against Acting," "Brighton Beach," "Hunger Pains," "Upstage Comedy," "Comedy on Rye" and "Measure for Measure."
Additionally, Boone is passionate about her other career as a voiceover actor. Having completed hundreds of commercials and animation projects, Boone`s favorite voiceover character to date is Cathy, from writer Cathy Guisewite`s popular comic strip.
A self-described "sports fanatic," Boone also enjoys cooking, singing and spending time with her family and friends. The actress splits her time between Los Angeles and New York. Her birthday is February 25.
During the 90`s, Tom Cavanagh pitched Labatt`s Blue Light beer in a popular series of ads that ran on Canadian television. In the ads, Tom complained about the contents of most light beers, using what became a famous catch-phrase, "If I wanted water, I would have asked for water." Tom often co-starred with a large dog who appeared less than thrilled to be part of the proceedings.
The actor originally picked to play Phil was Donal Logue, better known to MTV watchers as the strange cab driver who obsessed over rock videos and tried to discuss them with his passengers. Logue was a "temp" Phil, according to Rob Burnett, left the project to work on his own show, "Grounded for Life" (Fox), and Michael Ian Black was brought in after a nearly fruitless search for a replacement.

David Letterman`s Worldwide Pants production company is mainly responsible, in conjunction with NBC Studios and Viacom/Paramount. Former "Late Show" employees Rob Burnett and Jon Beckerman are the creators of the show, and Letterman himself serves as one of the executive producers.
The show is primarily shot in two clusters of New Jersey towns, separated by the "I-80 parallel". A lot of the locations for "Ed" are in small towns within 30 miles of the show`s Northvale headquarters; these include Oradell, Bergenfield, Hillsdale, Westwood, Glen Rock and Ridgewood. Some scenes from early episodes, use Nyack, New York, a town just north of the N.J.-N.Y. border.
Farther south along the Garden State Parkway are some larger towns that are used - Westfield, Montclair and Nutley.
The opening credits were shot in Westfield.
Stuckeybowl is the former Country Club Lanes on 199 Paris Avenue in Northvale, New Jersey. Country Club Lanes went out of business several years ago, and the show`s producers currently lease the building.
The building itself was modified - half the original 32 lanes were taken out, and it now houses a carpentry shop used by the production design team as well as the courthouse set, which is an near-exact replica of the Nutley, N.J. courtroom they used in earlier episodes (the key difference is that Nutley`s courtroom has the large mural behind the bench).
The producers leased private residences from several northern New Jersey homeowners for the shooting season early in the series, and used them for the "home" scenes. As the series moved on, more and more constructed sets have been added to the stuckeybowl lot location, including the interiors of the homes along with the interior of the school, The Smiling Goat and the Courthouse.

Here is the long and windy road that comprises the story behind ED`s theme song -
The first year`s theme song was "Next Year" by the Foo Fighters. It`s off their "There is Nothing Left to Lose" CD.-
The producers had to change the song for the second season because Paramount/Viacom did not own the rights to "Next Year" and they have a policy that all their shows have theme songs that are owned by them. That song was "Moment in the Sun" by Clem Snide, off their "The Ghost of Fashion" CD. You can download it for free from MP3.com. -
Chapter 3; After insistence by the producers ( and many fans) Viacom allowed an exception to be made and "Next Year" by the Foo Fighters was returned as the theme song at the beginning of season 3
A constantly-updated list of songs used in each episode is available at

In episodes 3 through 12, the writers added a character or thing called Godfrey - in every episode, it was someone or something different. "Godfrey" would take different forms: bit characters, references to someone from the past, even a bowling ball.
At the "Ed" seminar in New York on 4/17/01, Rob Burnett said that during the casting call for the character of Phil (as Donal Logue was only a "temp" Phil and left the project to do "Grounded for Life"), there was an African-American actor who was listed on the casting sheet only as "Godfrey." Both Rob and Jon Beckerman were writing the early episodes at the time, and were so taken with it that they both wrote it into the episode they were each writing. By the time episode 12-13 rolled around, they realized that it was "ruining the show," and dropped it.
Creators Rob Burnett and Jon Beckerman have said that the recurring $10 bet gag is inspired by their true-life experiences. For instance, Rob Burnett has mentioned in interviews that the first $10 bet used in "Ed" - meowing loud enough to get a stranger`s attention - was first done between himself and Beckerman on an airplane. "We`ve got to use that in the show!`" he recalls them saying at the time.
Tom Cavanagh has mentioned on talk shows that he, the producers and crew often engage in food-related bets - often consisting of dares about how much of a certain item somebody can eat in one sitting, or ingesting something generally considered unpalatable.
They`re from Abercrombie & Fitch`s Fall 2000 collection.
According to the man himself, the blue beaded "friendship bracelet" he always wears was a gift from Jana Marie Hupp. He said that the prop department has made backup bracelets in case he breaks it while playing sports, as the bracelet has become an integral part of the Ed wardrobe.
The shoulder bag often seen being worn by Ed on the show is manufactured by Timbuk2. The model is said to be a "classic messenger bag" , "Dee Dog" version. A link to the manufacturers web site is found in our "merchandise" section
