80: Hidden Agendas
Just when Ed (Tom Cavanagh) and Carol ( Julie Bowen) think that Ed`s ex wife Liz (Guest star, Lea Thompson) is out of their lives, she finds a way to reappear and disrupt not only their personal life, but now complicates things with another business opportunity for Ed. At the same time, Eli (Daryl "Chill" Mitchell) becomes involved in radio when he is given the opportunity to be the substitute host for the "Locked and Loaded" program on the local station. Meanwhile, Mike( Josh Randall) and Nancy(Jana Marie Hupp) have a foreign exchange student staying with them for a while and Mike is thrilled to have another male in the house. Unfortunately, Mike`s dreams are crushed when he realizes the boy has no interest in sports, but finds baking and sewing with Nancy quite stimulating. Overview Despite the conclusion of Liz?s ?Good Time Gulch? business, she still remains in Stuckeyville and in the lives of Ed and Carol. Furthermore, she seems to be looking for excuses to remain close to Ed. She recommends him to one of her clients so that she and Ed can work together. This client wants to purchase the Stuckeyville Community Center and build a high-end athletic club there. At first Ed believes that her efforts are Liz?s way of making up to him for the failure of their marriage. Carol believes that Liz is still in love with Ed, and wants more from him than forgiveness. Carol?s assessment of the situation turns out to be the correct one. Despite her attempts to insinuate herself into the lives of the couple, she is unable to reignite Ed?s feelings for her. Liz eventually tells the two of them goodbye, and asks Carol to take good care of Ed. Eli, angry to learn of the city council?s plan to permanently close the Stuckeyville Community Center, phones the radio station and gets into a debate with Dalton Locke, the station?s conservative talk show host. When the host hangs up on him, Eli goes to the station and confronts the guy on the air. Despite her anger at having one of her programs hijacked, station manager Kate McCormick offers Eli a job guest-hosting for the ailing Locke. Eli uses his new forum to take on the Stuckeyville City Council and City Manager Ralph Newell. Eli and Ed try to convince Newell to allow the community center to remain open by giving him a tour and showing him the good work the center does for the community. Newell explains to them that the money saved by closing the center was earmarked for schools. Later Eli learns from an anonymous tipster that the money was actually being used to build a road that would allow easier access to the city manager?s own business. Further research reveals that the schools weren?t receiving any of the proceeds from the sale. Eli and Ed expose Newell on the air, and the community center remains open. Ed also realizes that it was Liz who gave Eli the tip. When saying goodbye to Ed, Liz tells him that he was right: some things are more important that money. Elsewhere, Mike and Nancy welcome a foreign exchange student from Finland into their home. Mike is happy to no longer be the only male in the house and looks forward to playing sports and bonding with Gunter. It quickly becomes apparent that Gunter isn?t interested in sports, and prefers to spend his spare time with Nancy: baking, knitting, giving each other facials, and watching ?The Golden Girls? together. Mike concludes that Gunter is gay and worries that, should he ever have a gay son, he?ll be a lousy father because he can?t relate to a young man who isn?t interested in sports. Ed assures Mike that he?s already a great father and that he?ll find another way to relate to Gunter. Mike does try, and he and Gunter attend a flower-arranging class together. Mike also suggests that he and Gunter go shoe shopping together. Gunter?s true motives for spending so much time with Nancy become clear when, after a performance of ?I Could Have Danced All Night? with her, he grabs Nancy and kisses her. Although he apologizes to Nancy, Mike tells Gunter that he?ll have to leave.
