Synopsis
AS HALLOWEEN NEARS, HOW WILL VISITING CAROL AND ED SPEND AUTUMN IN NEW YORK? -- One week before Halloween, Carol (Julie Bowen) impresses one of her students (guest star Jonathan Togo) -- now a famous writer -- with her writing samples, so he invites her and Ed (Tom Cavanagh) to meet with a demanding magazine editor in New York City while the new couple live it up on the town. Elsewhere, the cunning Dr. Jerome (guest star Martin Chatinover) asks likable Mike (Josh Randall) to come down hard on his visiting granddaughter (guest star Melissa Miller) to see if she has the makings of a good doctor. Teens Warren (Justin Long) and Mark (Michael Genadry) adopt an amiable new freshman (guest star Noah Fleiss) who`s equally adept at mixing with the cool kids as he is with their more nerdy posse.

Overview
Dr. Jerome`s granddaughter comes in to observe Mike and decide whether or not she wants to pursue med school. Dr. Jerome instructs Mike to treat her very harshly and make sure that she has what it takes to become a doctor. After inital hesitation, Mike becomes quite good at telling Kate off, only to find out the whole thing is a psychological experiment for a class she`s taking in college. One of Carol`s former students returns to Stuckeyville, now an accomplished writer. He invites Carol to try writing for the magazine he is launching, and eventually when she is successful, she is invited on staff. She turns down the offer initially, but changes her mind when faced with a class full of English students and a Hawthorne novel. Nancy enlists Warren and Mark`s help in showing a new student the ropes at school. When the student becomes popular with the in-crowd, Warren and Mark see just how wrong they`ve been assuming all those "cool people" are a bunch of jerks and morons.
