Synopsis
Feeling glum about facing the holidays as a soon-to-be divorc?, Ed gives a Thanksgiving feast at Stuckeybowl in this enjoyable episode. He misses wayward-wife Liz in spite of himself, while Carol feels the same about ex-boyfriend Nick. Spotting a chance to cheer up his crush, Ed urges Carol to spend Turkey Day at the bowling alley with him and his pals. ?We`ll keep an eye on each other in case one of us starts to lose it---like an emotional buddy system,? he sweetly suggests. In other storylines, Ed`s client du jour is a Halloween prankster injured by his crotchety target. And Phil`s cooking up a cash-gobbling scam to sell ?fine Corinthian turkeys.? [TV Guide]

Overview
On his first Thanksgiving without his wife, Ed decides to start a new tradition and arranges an unconventional Thanksgiving feast at Stuckeybowl for his friends - with a 50-lb. meatloaf served instead of turkey. Ed and Carol -- who is spending her first Thanksgiving in seven years without Nick -- cook the dinner together and get through the holiday using an "emotional buddy system". Phil resells store-bought turkeys as "Fine Corinthian Turkeys"; he creates demand by staging a taste test with Shirley and Kenny in front of Kilroy`s Wondermarket, and attempts to sell the birds to locals for over $300 a piece. Mike dreads spending the holiday with his parents-in-law; Nancy`s father never seems to starts a conversation with him. Mike decides to wait him out and stare him down until he finally makes a comment. Ed represents Gavin Schrader, a young man who sustained an arm injury by a catapulted cantelope while following a Stuckeyville High tradition of breaking into a local man`s weekend cabin on Haloween night. It turns out Ed used to break into the same cabin when he was a teenager, so he feels empathy for Gavin`s situation.

Songs
"I Wanna Be Around" - Tony Bennett
During Thanksgiving dinner scene

"One on One" - Hall & Oates
Played in background at bowling alley

"Dream Girl" - Robert and Johnny
played while Mike waits out his father-in-law for a turn in conversation

Trivia
Ten Bucks
In the supermarket, Mike bets Ed he can`t ask a clerk where the lettuce is - pronouncing it "let-oos". "What kind of jackass calls it let-toos?" asks the clerk. (Ed up $20)

The Rules
The game of Skidball, pioneered by Ed and Mike during their high school years, is played with a regulation football on a wet field. Scoring methods and ground rules are still unclear.

Legal Update
Ed loses the case, perhaps snowed under by hearsay evidence that 50 "No Trespassing" signs were placed on the property. His record as a lawyer is now 2-2, with one settlement.

Who's Godfrey?
The manager at Kilroy`s Wondermarket is named Godfrey.

Dave Alert!
The man holding up the "Let`s Go Stuckeyville" sign at the football game is Late Show staffer Bob Borden ("the 12th floor receptionist"). The phrase "Hold onto your keys and wigs", used in this episode, is a Letterman classic.

Dave Alert!
The construction of the cantaloupe catapult is very reminiscent of the donut catapult once used to fling sugared donuts into the "Late Show" crowd.

Stubbs Schemes
Phil, with financial assistance from Ed, hoards store-bought turkeys, marks them up to $300, and renames them "Fine Corinthian Turkeys" in the hope of reselling them to unsuspecting Stuckeyvillians.

Fine Food and Drink
Phil engages in a scam for Thanksgiving involving "Fine Corinthian turkeys" (see above). Mike dares Ed to ask for "laytoos" instead of lettuce. Carol laments the loss of the sugared lemon tradition. Ed cooks up a 50 pound meatloaf for Thanksgiving dinner. Gavin is injured by a flying canteloupe.

  Quotes
"I can never decide whether you're totally adorable or totally creepy."
- Carol Vessey (to Ed)

"I've got my money on grease fire."
- Dr. Mike Burton (re: plans for the first annual Edward J. Stevens Thanksgiving dinner)

"There goes one inspirational bastard."
- Kenny Sandusky (to Carol, re: Ed)
