IN SEASON PREMIERE, ED AND CAROL FUMBLE AROUND AS KISSIN` FOOLS IN NEW ROMANCE -- Ed (Tom Cavanagh) and Carol (Julie Bowen) awkwardly sort out their newfound romance as they plan their first official date. Meanwhile, Ed represents Mike (Josh Randall) and Nancy (JanaMarie Hupp) when their newly purchased purebred puppy is a muddled mutt; Eli (Daryl "Chill" Mitchell) casts his eyes on the pies of a baking beauty (new series regular Marcy Harriell, "Rent") who is also a smart businesswoman; Phil (Michael Ian Black) takes it upon himself to find Ed a new apprentice lawyer. Rachel Cronin also stars.
Ed and Carol find that dating isn`t quite the same as being "just friends." They struggle with the awkward physical part of their new relationship, as well as not being quite as at ease with one another as they once were. Eventually a spontaneous night in the bowling alley puts it right.
Mike and Nancy buy a puppy from a local breeder, assured they are buying a purebred. When they learn from their vet that the dog is in fact a mutt, they turn to Ed in an attempt to get some money back, while being allowed to keep "Willie Butch" as part of the Burton family.
Phil initiates a search for a new law partner for Ed. He starts with "Super Frankie," a former photo shop employee. Ed interviews a couple of candidates, but they all fail to impress.
Eli goes head to head with a local pie maker. The pies are snapped up by hungry Stuckeybowlers, causing Shirley to buy pies in bulk, to Eli`s frustration. He finally meets the pie woman, and finds a person against whom his bargaining skills are useless.
