Synopsis
In the season premiere, Ed (Tom Cavanagh) welcomes back Carol (Julie Bowen) after her summer-long travel fling with Dennis (John Slattery) and grills her about their farewell kiss last spring, but the attorney must also concentrate on his new client -- an abrasive scam artist (guest star Danny DeVito) who bilked Mike (Josh Randall) on a betting scheme. Elsewhere, Ed is forced to hire a new Stuckeybowl employee and one of the applicants (new series regular Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, "The John Larroquette Show") is a fast-talker who refuses to be ignored and brims over with radical new ideas.

Overview
Kenny, upon bowling a nearly perfect game, decides it`s time to move on to greener pastures, leaving Stuckeyville in the hunt for a new employee. Phil takes it upon himself to interview new candidates, but a fast talking paraplegic enters Stuckeybowl and clears out the other candidates, all the while impressing Ed. While none of his references check out, Ed still takes a chance on the kid, much to Phil`s disgust. Mike and Nancy are plagued with a steady stream of bills, which Nancy is panicking about. Mike receives mysterious black envelopes containing betting predictions for baseball games. After receiving 5 correct predictions, the next letter asks for $250 before getting the next prediction. Mike does so and then places a $3000 bet with a bookie friend of Phil`s, only to lose his shirt. Upon figuring out who the mysterious predictor is, Ed and Mike confront him, only to see him arrested by the police. Ed agrees to defend the man to protect Mike`s reputation, and eventually does get him off some serious fraud charges. Carol confronts Ed over "The Kiss." She is furious, knowing that Ed knew Dennis would propose and still carried through with it. Dennis challenges Ed to a midnight duel with cricket bats, and eventually decides to leave Carol for the wilds of Minnesota, since she cannot make up her mind. Carol decides to accept Dennis`s proposal of marriage.

Songs

Trivia
Ten Bucks
Ed bets Mike ten bucks to ask a passerby where a hotel is all the while cranking up the volume on the radio and making the man shout out the directions.

Legal Update
Ed agrees to defend Jack Carmichael, a psychologist who has capitalized on human nature by convincing a few people of his amazing talent at choosing baseball games. In fact, he simply sends out a series of letters making guesses, narrowing down the field of people who believe he is correct, until he manages to get them to pay him $250 for his next prediction. Ed agrees to defend him to protect Mike`s reputation in town, and winds up getting Jack exonerated from serious fraud charges.

Fine Food and Drink
Molly drops the "Welcome home, Carol!" cake at Stuckeybowl. Shirley is impressed to discover they serve Sunny Delight at the local lockup. Eli freaks out when Shirley puts ketchup on a pretzel. Warren orders himself and a sad Carol a couple of slow gin fizzes.
