When Carol reaches the sobering conclusion that her longtime boyfriend (Gregory Harrison) just isn`t spontaneous or fun-loving enough for her, she decides to break up with him, which is lovely music to Ed`s ears. Elsewhere, Ed represents an attractive woman (Joanna Going) whose employer, a fast-talking used-car salesman (Peter Gerety), has been slipping extra money in her paychecks and now sues her to get back almost $5,000...
Ed defends Ceela McKenzie, ex-secretary at Stuckeyville Motors, who is being sued over a payroll error by her former boss, Phil Knight - a salesman so slick that he gets Ed into a sportscar instead of discussing the case.
Carol has an epiphany over breakfast one morning, and decides that her inability to throw a waffle to Nick is a sign that she feels uncomfortable around thim; she initiates the "big talk", and ends their seven-year relationship.
On Dr. Jerome`s day off, Mike finds that his boss had been making unflattering comments to patients. When he returns, Dr. Jerome demands to observe him, which leads to more slights and insults. When Mike summons the nerve to confront him, Dr. Jerome orders Mike to perform a full examination on him as a test.
Molly clashes with Bob Crickmore, a history teacher at Stuckeyville High, over the female lead for the school play; Bob wants to cast a beautiful girl, while Molly feels that a less attractive girl is the right choice. They bring in Ed, then the metal shop teacher, to break the tie.

Legal Update Ed`s client is ordered to pay back the nearly $5000 overage from her paychecks, but she only has to pay it in $5 weekly installments over 18 years. Nevertheless, it`s Ed`s first loss in court and ensures that he will never break Perry Mason`s win streak. Ed`s record is now 2-1 with one out-of-court settlement.
Dave Alert! "Late Show" stagehand Kenny Sheehan makes an appearance as Mr. Waslouis, Stuckeyville High`s metal shop teacher.
Ten Bucks Ed puts Mike up to ordering a burger using only two words: "burger me." (Ed up $10)
Who's Godfrey? One of the boys trying out for the play (the one who sings Natalie Imbruglia`s "Torn") is named Godfrey.
Fine Food and Drink Carol realizes her relationship with Nick is at a standstill, based on her inability to throw him a waffle at breakfast. Ed later throws waffles at Carol`s window. When she lets him in, he comes bearing ice cream sundae fixings. Dr. Jerome finds that the only thing wrong with Mike`s examination of him is that he neglects to offer a lollipop.
Ed`s Career Paths Ed reveals he worked in the Stuckeyville Ice Cream Shoppe.
