ED HIRED TO MONITOR HUBBY`S WILD BIRTHDAY; VINCENT PASTORE AND ANDREA MARTIN GUEST-STAR AS FEUDING COUPLE -- Ed (Tom Cavanagh) is perplexed when a middle-aged couple (guest stars Vincent Pastore, "The Sopranos," and Andrea Martin, "SCTV") hire him to supervise the husband`s 48-hour birthday fling without any rules or boundaries -- but the wife insists that Ed dutifully report to her all that he sees during that libertine span. Meanwhile, when Carol (Julie Bowen) and Dennis (John Slattery) patch up their romantic split, Ed learns that she lied to him about her relationship with the troubled principal.. Elsewhere, Warren (Justin Long) at last wins a date from the dreamy Jessica (guest star Robin Paul) while Phil (Michael Ian Black) and Kenny (Mike Starr) whip up a sugary concoction destined for the culinary hall of shame. Josh Randall, Jana Marie Hupp, and Lesley Boone also star.

Legal Update Kay Pazutti hires Ed to monitor Ralph`s activities during his 48 hours of freedom. Kay feels she`ll be better able to live with what happens if she doesn`t have to wonder. Initially Ralph wants Ed to lie (ostensibly to spare Kay`s feelings) but, in the end, decides to be honest with Kay.
Ten Bucks While at the barbershop with Ed and Mr. Pazutti, Mike bets Ed $10 to let the barber put temporary red dye in Ed`s hair. (Ed is now up $60).
