Synopsis
With a crackpot team of lawyers by his side, Ed goes to court over a contract scrawled on a bar napkin by four high school buddies. When one of the friends strikes it rich, a la Bill Gates, and denies the contract, he hires a big-city law firm as his counsel, which just happens to be the same firm that fired Ed. Meanwhile, Ed has the daunting task of finding a manager for Stuckeybowl and realizes his only choices are Phil, Kenny or Shirley..

Overview
Ed takes the case for three down-on-their-luck guys - Lou, Ernie and Bob - who made a pact in high school with their friend Arthur Daly that should any of them get rich, they would all share the wealth. Arthur has a $100 million computer business and the contract was written on a bar napkin. Ed needs to devote more time to the practice, so he needs to promote one of the staff - Phil, Kenny and Shirley - to manager. During the interview process, we learn that Shirley once sold women`s shoes over the phone and that Kenny has a nursing degree from Tufts University. Ed makes a cheesy music video of Chicago`s "You`re the Inspiration" in a last-ditch effort to escape the life-long designation as Carol`s "friend." Mike and Nancy squabble over who should stay up to take care of baby Sarah. Ed receives his divorce papers from New York City, and has to deal with the prospect of being alone.

Songs
"You`re the Inspiration" - Peter Cetera
Ed lipsynchs to this in his music video

"So Nice (Summer Samba)" - Bebel Gilberto
During closing montage

"America" - Neil Diamond
During Phil`s interview for the Stuckeybowl manager`s job

Trivia
Legal Update
Arthur settles the case before a judgement is reached. Ed`s record in court now stands at 2-0 with 1 settlement.

Dave Alert!
Ed mentions his law firm in NYC was "Farmer and Sheehan" - presumably a reference to Pat Farmer and Kenny Sheehan, staffers on Letterman`s "Late Show."

Ten Bucks
Mike bets Ed that he cannot drink an entire bottle of pancake syrup. (Ed up $20)

Who's Godfrey?
During Phil`s elaborate song-and-dance number in defense of his bid for manager, a local man declared that Phil has a name for every ball in the alley: "This one`s Godfrey!"

Sarah`s Nannies
On his scheduled night to stay up with Sarah, Mike hires Kenny, a licensed pediatric nurse, to take care of her so that he can get a good night`s sleep. (4th)

Fine Food and Drink
Mike hides behind the guise of "Pancake Mouse" when Nancy gets upset with him. Waffles are also a family favorite. The $10 bet involves a bottle of syrup (see above). One of Ed`s new clients asks if he can have some bowling alley "natch-os". The order must be explained to a confused Shirley. It is later revealed that the same client blew his life savings trying to start a broasted chicken restaurant. Kenny reveals that he makes homemade root beer. At Stuckeyville High, Warren uses hand puppets to act out the scene in which Oliver Twist asks for more gruel. In Phil`s bid to become manager of Stuckeybowl, he brings in a customer who claims Phil baked him a cake when he broke 200. When Carol asks Ed about the woman with whom Nick set him up in the bar, Ed replies Marie was too full of schnapps for his liking.

Nicknames
Phil calls Kenny "Gigantor". Kenny calls Ed "Chief".

- Warren Cheswick (to Ed on career day)
