Synopsis
CHRIS ELLIOTT GUEST-STARS AS SLEAZY LAWYER IN THANKSGIVING EPISODE -- Ed (Tom Cavanagh) is asked by the mysterious principal Dennis (John Slattery) to represent him after a minor parking lot fender-bender but when the other party`s unscrupulous lawyer (guest star Chris Elliott, "Get a Life!") asks for an exorbitant amount, Ed`s client abruptly asks him to settle at any cost because he fears exposing his murky past in court. Meanwhile, Ed tries to resurrect the annual Thanksgiving Day parade but is further torn when he notices the romantic relationship between Carol (Julie Bowen) and Dennis continues to percolate. Elsewhere, Nancy (Jana Marie Hupp) declares war on her fellow "cookie moms" when she is sabotaged while launching her own cookie line.

Overview
Ed, disheartened by the notion that the Thanksgiving Day parade is cancelled, asks Phil, Shirley, and Kenny to organize the parade by drumming up local business owners to participate. Despite their attempts to convince the locals that they are actually professional parade organizers, in the end, it is Ed`s free bowling scheme that brings them in and gets them to join up. Dennis is involved in a small accident and asks Ed to help him prove the claim against him is fraudulent, as Dennis has allowed his insurance to lapse. Ed attempts to settle with the other driver`s bizarre lawyer, but the lawyer not only refuses to settle, but continues to up the price, aware that Dennis does not want to go into a court room. Ed finally scares the plaintiff into dropping the case, for fear of being discovered as committing fraud. Nancy is foiled by local cookie moms at the farmers market as she attempts to sell her own cookies as a hobby. The other cookie moms, motivated by jealousy over Nancy`s fabulous treats, sabotage her booth. Nancy vows revenge, though Mike takes her off the baking circuit for her mental health. Nancy winds up giving away all her cookies free of charge in the parade, causing all the cookie mom`s sales to tank. Carol and Dennis continue to draw closer, and their relationship becomes considerably less frosty. Finally, Dennis confesses to Carol the true reason he was fired from his job in Massachusetts--injuring a student during a DWI infraction--and confesses to her that he is a recovering alcoholic. He was willing to settle the case out of court to avoid his painful past being dragged out in court, as he does not want to leave Stuckeyville just when he`s starting not to hate Carol. Fortunately his lawyer ensures that nothing about Dennis is aired in public.

Songs

Trivia
Ten Bucks
Mike bets Ed ten bucks to go over to two women at the farmer`s market and introduce himself as a jackass. Ed walks over to do just that, when one woman turns around and asks, "What do you want, jackass?" Mike has paid the woman ten bucks to say this to Ed, who insists Mike pay up. (Ed is now up $40)

Legal Update
Ed defends Dennis in court against an unsavory lawyer who dabbles in Far Eastern religions. Ed gets nowhere in attempting to negotiate a settlement with the lawyer, and meets him and his client in the court building. After getting Dennis to walk in the courtroom, Ed threatens to countersue over the fraudulent case, and despite his attorney`s objections, the other driver insists on dropping the charges. Ed`s record as a lawyer is now 14-7 with 5 settlements and 1 incomplete.

Stubbs Schemes
Phil gets Kenny and Shirley to dress up and they go through Stuckeyville pretending to be professional parade organizers, claiming to have organized the Macy`s Thanksgiving Parade. Their attempts at getting local businessmen to sign up to participate in the parade tank, and Ed takes over.

Fine Food and Drink
Carol bumps into Dennis as he is exiting the pie shop. Nancy launches a new line of cookies at the local farmer`s market, only to discover that because they are so good, they draw the ire of fellow cookie vendors at the market.
