Continuing from the conclusion of last season`s finale, Ed (Tom Cavanagh) is shocked to see his ex-flame Bonnie (guest star Rena Sofer, "Melrose Place") appear on his doorstep just as his budding relationship with Carol (Julie Bowen) is percolating. In the legal world, Ed is called on to represent a desperate Warren (Justin Long) in court when the teen is arrested for supplying beer at a party where a fellow student is injured. Elsewhere: new homebody Nancy (Jana Marie Hupp) is driven to distraction by her domestic duties, and Kenny (Mike Starr) is befuddled by the delivery of a pony that was supposedly ordered by an absent Phil (Michael Ian Black).
Bonnie Hane glides back into town to find out for herself if she is over Ed. Despite her many attempts to gain Ed`s affection, she comes to realize that he is not interested in her and leaves town to re-connect with the man who jilted her at the alter.
Warren, in an attempt to win Donna back from David, invites them to a party hosted by "FosCat", a Stuckeyville High jock. In order to gain access to the party, Warren brings with him an illegally obtained keg. A drunk David later falls off his bike and seriously injures himself, prompting his parents to press charges against Warren.
Carol and the new principal square off. Mr. Martino is a prickly man to get around, and is not charmed by Carol. They go head to head over Warren and Mr. Martino`s methods of punishment.
Nancy adapts to her new role as a stay at home mother, dealing with a dismissive couch repairman. When he simply "glues" a leg back on her sofa, which promptly falls apart again, she publicly humiliates him until he and his crew repair the sofa properly. She also adjusts to life in the house.
Carol and Ed struggle with their feelings about getting involved with each other after the prom. Carol finally admits to fear that she and Ed will split up after a time.
Kenny and Shirley attempt to run the bowling alley without Phil. While they initially find the change exciting, they become increasingly nervous as the date of the health inspector`s visit approaches. When he arrives and threatens to shut down Stuckeybowl, Phil reappears to save the day.

Ten Bucks Mike bets Ed ten bucks to kiss the garden gnome of a neighbor who is out tending his lawn--the fact that Mr. Gordon will see Ed do it makes it hilarious. (Ed up $40)
Legal Update Ed defends a young Warren in court over charges stemming from the Fos-Cat`s party. While the judge decides that Warren was not criminally negligent, he does give young Cheswick a stern warning that he will not be so lucky next time. Ed`s record as a lawyer is now 11-6 with 4 settlements and one incomplete.
Stubbs Schemes Phil purchases a pony before leaving for New York. The pony later comes in handy as a bribe to the health inspector who wants to shut Stuckeybowl down.
Fine Food and Drink Ed claims that Bonnie has interrupted his and Carol`s very important discussion about raisins. Mike invents the "Donagel"--half donut, half bagel. Warren scoffs at spending another night eating his mom`s zucchini bread when Mark suggests they skip FosCat`s party. Warren is later busted for bringing a keg of beer to that party. Ed nervously twirls spaghetti on his fork when dining with Bonnie.
