Synopsis
Ed (Tom Cavanagh) senses trouble when Big Rudy (guest star John Goodman, "Roseanne"), the back-slapping former owner of Stuckeybowl, ambles back into town and admires Ed`s improvements to the joint so much that he wants to buy it back -- but the good ol` boy won`t take "no" for an answer. Elsewhere: Ed`s fast-track romance with Bonnie (guest star Rena Sofer, "Melrose Place") takes a detour when she`s offered an exciting job in Washington, D.C.; Carol (Julie Bowen) reluctantly ends up "dating" a handsome young man (guest star David Eigenberg) whom Molly (Lesley Boone) has been eyeing; in court, Ed represents a songwriting female rocker (guest star Paige Price) who was kicked out of her band; and Big Rudy seeks an ally in Phil (Michael Ian Black), his former bowling alley employee.

Overview
Ed and Bonnie`s relationship is going along better than ever, until Bonnie announces that she has accepted a clerkship with a federal judge in Washington. After an initial rift, they patch things up and part amicably. Ed takes on a court case involving a band who has kicked out their lead singer. While Amanda does not want re-entry into The Solids, she does want them to quit using her songs. Although she loses her case in court, the band later comes to her, asking her to return. She refuses, and the band`s audition with a prominent record company exec flops. Carol and Molly join Nancy`s book club. Member Jeff Alexander catches Molly`s eye, but later Nancy convinces Jeff to go on a date with Carol, who does not want to dine with Ed and Bonnie alone. Carol tries to correct the problem by talking up Jeff and Molly to each other, despite having had a great time with Jeff herself. Big Rudy, former Stuckeyville owner, is back in town, and wants to buy the bowling alley back from Ed. When Ed refuses to sell, Big Rudy engages in some sabotage. His fatal mistake is enlisting Phil`s help. Phil later rats Big Rudy out, and Big Rudy leaves Stuckeybowl in shame.

Songs
"Until You Break" - Matthew Sweet
Played when Bonnie came over to Ed`s house near end of episode

"Right There in Front of Me" - Marshall Crenshaw
During closing montage

Trivia
Ten Bucks
Ed bets Mike can`t speak in a British accent to Hillary Sanders, a fellow Stuckeyville High alum, who comes into the Smiling Goat. (Ed up $50)

Fine Food and Drink
Jeff offers to get Carol a Tom Collins or a Slow Gin Fizz during their dinner with Ed and Bonnie. When Big Rudy magnanimously announces that all drinks at Stuckeybowl are on him, Ed offers to pitch in free beer nuts.

Legal Update
Ed takes a band, "The Solids", to court to try and get them to stop using songs written by former lead singer Amanda. When Amanda`s notebook turns up missing, neither side has concrete proof of authorship. The judge cannot find in Amanda`s favor. Ed`s record as a lawyer is now 6-4 with three settlements.

Nicknames
Ed dresses up as "Captain Stuckeyville". Jeff calls Ed "Mr. Ed".

Dave Alert!
"The Solids" are in fact a real band; two of its members (lead singer Carter Bays and drummer Craig Thomas) are writers on the staff of Dave`s "Late Show". Amanda`s last name, Bays, is a tribute to Carter.

"Mr. Calculus Teacher Man is in the hay-ouse!"

"Ed, this is the man responsible for sabotage against one Stuckeybowl Bowling Center. You sir have been served up like a trout on a silver platter."

- Jeff Alexander (discussing with Carol the way dinner went)

"I'm thinking ferrets."
- Phil Stubbs (as Ed surveys the first instance of sabotage by Big Rudy)
