Synopsis
Sparks fly when Ed goes head-to-head with a pretty district attorney (Rena Sofer) over the fate of a good Samaritan (Michael Mulheren) guilty of putting quarters into others` expired parking meters. Molly chides Carol for taking Ed for granted. Meanwhile, Phil searches for his personal catch phrase.

Overview
Ed takes on district attorney Bonnie Hane in a court of law over the case of Hal Shaffer, a man who puts dimes in expired parking meters to thwart the meter maid. Sparks fly, to the point that the judge inquires, "Am I going to have to separate the two of you?". Bonnie wins the case, but decides to appeal, having not won "enough". Carol comes home from a vacation to discover that Warren has turned off the heat in her apartment, and the pipes have burst in her basement. She implores Mike for help, but Ed jumps in and offers his assistance. They make a bet: if Ed can`t fix the pipe, he has to run through Stuckeyville in his underwear, but if he can, she has to read a speech in the center of town. Ed turns out to be a "plumbing hustler" and Carol reads. Nancy struggles juggling family and career as she goes up for a big promotion at Lifestream Greeting Cards. She doesn`t give her people the correct deadline, and winds up improvising her way through a presentation. Upon receiving the promotion, she must decide where her priorities are. Mike and Ed decide to teach Sarah to roll over, in a humorous video which they make for Nancy.

Trivia
Who's Godfrey?
Phil uses the name Godfrey when calling into the radio station to identify the last syllable of REO Speed____. He uses the airwaves as a way to publicize his catch phrase, "Shave my poodle".

Ten Bucks
Ed bets Mike that he can`t walk up to a stranger in the bowling alley and sing Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack`s mushy ballad "Tonight I Celebrate My Love." (Ed up $30)

Legal Update
Ed loses the parking-meter case to Bonnie Hane; his record as a lawyer is now 4-3 with one settlement.

Dave Alert!
The name of the good samaritan deli-shop owner, Hal Shaffer, is a tribute to both former "Late Show" director Hal Gurnee and long-time bandleader Paul Shaffer.

Dave Alert!
The police chief`s "don`t call me Chief" line is a reference to a recurring sketch on the "Late Show", in which Dave (or one of the shop owners in the Ed Sullivan Theater neighborhood) constantly ends sentences with "Chief" until the other person in the conversation orders them to stop.

Dave Alert!
The flustered meter maid that asks Mr. Shaffer not to make him "look bad" is 53 years old - David Letterman`s age at the time the episode was first aired.

The director of this episode, Tim Van Patten, has also directed many episodes of another New Jersey-based show, "The Sopranos."
